Repairing Scratches on Aluminium Window Frames

Scratched and chipped aluminium window and door frames can be repaired on site, colour matched to the original finish, without removing the frame or the glass.

Why a scratch in a frame matters

The coating on an aluminium frame is what protects the metal. Once a scratch goes through it, moisture and salt reach the bare aluminium, and corrosion can spread underneath the surrounding finish. In coastal areas this happens faster, so a scratch is worth repairing early.

Much of this damage happens during construction and fit-out: scaffolding, tools and cleaning all leave their mark before handover.

Powder coated or anodised?

The finish decides the repair. Powder coating is a coloured layer bonded on top of the metal: opaque, solid in colour, and matt, satin or gloss. Anodising is part of the metal itself and keeps a metallic look in which the grain of the aluminium stays visible.

A repair made for one finish fails on the other, so identifying the finish comes first. Metallic and pearlescent coatings need particular care, because they change appearance with the viewing angle.

Why touch-up pens rarely work

Touch-up pens sit on top of the finish instead of blending into it. The colour is generic, the edge stays visible and the repair weathers differently from the original. Some fillers also contaminate the surface, which makes a proper repair harder later.

How we repair a frame

  • Preparation: the frame is cleaned of dust, salt and grease, and surrounding glass and walls are masked.
  • Levelling: the scratch is sanded and feathered into the surrounding finish; deeper gouges are filled first.
  • Colour matching: the colour and sheen are matched to the frame as it is today, not only to its original code.
  • Spray finishing: the repair is sprayed on site and blended into the original finish so no patch is visible.

Looking after repaired frames

Clean with mild, non-abrasive products, avoid strong alkaline cleaners, and protect frames with low-tack tape during any later building work.
